Ontario’s Nuclear Advantage (ONA) proudly celebrates today’s announcement of the completed refurbishment construction at the Darlington Nuclear Generating Station. With all four units finished ahead of schedule and under budget, this achievement marks a pivotal milestone for Ontario’s nuclear industry.
The successful completion of Darlington’s refurbishment highlights Ontario’s proven ability to deliver complex, large-scale nuclear projects. It lays a strong foundation for the province’s future nuclear growth and energy security.
Refurbishment and continued operation of Darlington up to 2055 is expected to contribute a total of $90 billion to Ontario’s GDP and increase employment across the province by an average of 14,200 jobs annually.
“The completion of refurbishment construction at Darlington ahead of schedule and under budget clearly demonstrates what Ontario’s nuclear sector can deliver. With OPG’s leadership and a highly skilled, province-wide supply chain, Ontario is well positioned to advance the next phase of nuclear development, supporting long-term jobs, economic growth, and a reliable electricity system for decades to come,” said Julie O’Driscoll, Executive Director of Ontario’s Nuclear Advantage.
The refurbishment work involved the replacement and rehabilitation of major reactor components, extensive system upgrades, and modernization to meet current regulatory standards.
Thousands of Canadian workers, including skilled tradespeople, engineers, project managers, and support staff, played a direct role in delivering the project, with the vast majority of project spending retained in Ontario and supporting domestic suppliers.
With all four Darlington units refurbished and with the final unit returning to service in the coming weeks, Ontario is better equipped to meet growing electricity demand from population growth, electrification, and industrial expansion, while ensuring a reliable, Canadian-made electricity system for the future.
